The growing importance of OTT services and their impact on the media and telecoms markets is widely recognised in Vietnam, where expansion continues enhance the industry.
Cloud-based film and television service Hooq, owned by Singtel, is expanding to Vietnam and Malaysia in 2017, to be followed by the Middle East and other regions.
Hooq joins a market said to be dominated by small-scale businesses that are taking the lead in the OTT market. Singtel has a majority stake in Hooq and is part-owned by Warners Brothers and Sony Pictures. Its expansion in Vietnam will compete against Netflix.
Meanwhile the digital economy continues to show growth across the country, taking into account subscriptions, internet, social media usage and online content.
According to a 2016 report Veit Nam Digital Assessment, online activity shows a 25 per cent year-on-year increase.
In other developments, the country’s largest pay-television operator, VTVcab, has deployed a wide array of Broadpeak solutions to power its new OTT multiscreen services. Broadpeak designs and manufactures video delivery components for IPTV, Cable and OTT services.
Speaking of the collaboration, Nam Bui Huy, CTO at VTVcab, said: “Providing 2 million subscribers with high-quality video on a wide range of devices would be too challenging for us without an experienced technology partner like Broadpeak by our side.”
He continued: “Broadpeak’s CDN and server solutions, along with the company’s success in deploying OTT multiscreen services in the global telco environment, give us the upper hand against the competition, increasing our revenue opportunities.”
